Hi! I’m Char the Celebrant.
You’re here! Go on then, pull up a chair for my elevator pitch.
Welcome to Char the Celebrant – where ceremonies are heartfelt, deeply personal and truly human. Because we know that the moments we gather for really matter. The big ones. The ones that sting. The bittersweet ones. The joy-filled, laugh-until-you’re-sapped-of-oxygen ones. These are the moments we pause and say: this deserves to be marked properly.
Whether it’s a wedding, elopement, naming ceremony, funeral or anything else (and I stress, anything), my job is to create something so unmistakably yours, that everyone in the room feels it in every syllable, reading, in-joke, song choice, and loaded pause.
No soulless ‘fill in the blanks’ registrar script. No ticking stopwatch. No ban on swearing if that’s you. No dress code. And absolutely no AI slop.
Instead, you get time, care, rigour, curiosity and a celebrant who’ll get to know you like a mate and craft something clever, meaningful and entirely your own. So, have a dig around.
You’re very welcome here.
Ceremonies
For weddings and namings, I want your ceremony to feel playful, warm and bursting with personality. Not polished within an inch of its life, but full of the gritty, gorgeous humanness that makes your relationships what they are. The real stuff that people remember long after the confetti has been swept away.
For funerals, I believe in doing right by the people we love. In celebrating lives with tenderness, respect, adoration and honesty. In creating space for grief, laughter, memory and love to sit alongside one another, exactly as they should.
About Me
In a world heavy on fear, fragmentation and overwhelm, ceremony offers us a space for closeness, warmth and unyielding love. A moment to pause and remind us we are not alone. Not ever. So let’s celebrate that!
I want my families and couples to feel like their ceremony is being officiated by a best mate. To do that, I turn your stories into ceremonies that are talked about for years to come. I bring a gentleness and way with words that makes people feel seen, heard and held – it’s why I do it.
If you want to get to know me away from the celebrant folder, head to the ‘About’ page.

FAQs
Are celebrant-led ceremonies legally binding?
In the UK, celebrant-led ceremonies aren’t currently legally binding on their own – which means most couples choose to do the legal paperwork separately at a registry office. That’s the beauty of it. Your actual ceremony can then be completely personal, relaxed and entirely about you, without restrictions, scripts or time limits.
There is hope, however, that this will change in the near future. Read more about wedding reform in the UK (and cross your fingers!).
Naming and funeral ceremonies don’t require legal binding in the same way, so they can be fully celebrant-led from start to finish.
Where do you conduct ceremonies?
Anywhere people have stories worth telling, in the UK and abroad. I’m very portable! I’m based in London and don’t charge additional travel costs within a 50-mile radius. Beyond that, I’ll simply add travel/accommodation costs where needed – but I’m happy to travel anywhere you want me.
How much do your ceremonies cost?
Wedding ceremonies start from £700 and elopements from £480, excluding travel costs outside of London. If you’d like extra support – such as vow writing help, sourcing props/materials or special touches for your ceremony, we can chat through any additional costs together during the booking process.
Funerals start from £300 and namings from £200.
When do you take payment?
Payments are split into three parts to make things feel manageable:
- A deposit when you book (usually 30%)
- A payment upon final completion of your script, after unlimited edits (usually 55%)
- The final balance a few weeks before your ceremony (the final 15%)
If we’re working on a shorter-term basis, we can discuss this. If you need a slightly different payment structure, let’s chat. I’m always happy to find something that works.
How do we book you?
Easy – just fill out the contact form on the website or email me at hello@charthecelebrant.com. From there, we’ll arrange a chat, get to know each other properly and see if we’re a good fit.
We don’t really know what we want yet – can you help?
Completely. In fact, loads of people start there. You don’t need a fully formed vision before we talk – we’ll build it together. I’ll guide you through ideas, readings, rituals, music, structure and all the lovely little details until the ceremony feels entirely representative of you (or whoever we’re celebrating).
Can we include personal vows, reading or rituals?
Absolutely. That’s where the magic lives! Whether you want hand-fasting, tequila shots, poetry, audience participation, quiet moments, family traditions or your dog walking down the aisle in a jewel-encrusted bow tie – I’m here for it all.
What’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?
A registrar performs the legal side of things. A celebrant creates the personal side of things. Think of a registrar as the official referee, looking out for rules and stats and I’m your freestyle dance partner who’ll bring the party, if that’s what you’re into.
With an independent celebrant, there are no standard scripts, no rushed timings and no restrictions around content, tone or location. You get a ceremony built completely around your people, your story and your values.
How involved are you in the process?
Very involved – in the best way. I spend real time getting to know you, or the person we’re celebrating so the ceremony feels authentic, thoughtful and deeply personal. I’ll write everything from scratch, support you throughout the process and be there to gently guide the whole ceremony on the day itself.
Do you only do weddings?
Not at all. I create weddings, namings, funerals and anything else you’re looking for – with the same care, warmth and attention to deal. You might instead be looking for a vow renewal, a divorce ceremony, a gender transition ceremony, an adoption ceremony; this list goes on and (almost) anything is possible!
What’s the process we’ll go through together?
